- What's the difference between a power chair and a scooter?
Power chairs are steered with a joystick, allowing for more control and requiring little arm or hand strength. Power chairs allow you to steer using just your fingertips. Your hands and arms are also supported at all times on a power chair. Power chairs are for individuals who have upper extremity problems. Electric scooters are controlled with handlebars, or "tillers," which require more upper body strength. This is because you must be able to hold the tiller/handlebars for extended time periods. The handlebar control also requires greater upper body strength. Power wheelchairs can be used inside and outside of the home, while electric scooters are designed primarily for out-of-home uses and longer distances. Power wheelchairs offer the user more options for customization, while electric scooters cannot be adapted to fit the individual's needs. Power wheelchairs also have more seating options to further suit the user's needs.
- What's the difference between a semi-electric bed and full-electric bed?
Fully Electric Hospital Beds have 6 buttons on the control which operate the head up, head down leg up, leg down and also raise the entire bed up and down: all at the push of a button. Semi Electric Hospital Beds have 4 buttons on the control which operate the head up, head down, leg up and leg down. The bed can be raised up and down, but it is done manually with a crank at the end of the bed.
- What is a rollator?
A rollator is basically a standard walker with tires attached. It also has a seat, therefore often called a rolling walker with seat. It is collapsible for easy storage and transporation. Unlike a regular walker, a rollator doesn't involve the lift that a normal walker requires. It makes walking a smoother process. A rollator however requires that the user be stable enough to not let it get away from them since it has wheels.
- How long do I have to charge my power mobility for?
When Power mobility is received, it should be charged for at least 8 hours before use, and 8 hours if used on a daily basis. If it is not used on a daily basis, we recommend charging 5 to 6 hours a day.
- Can I use my equipment outdoors?
No. Medicare's coverage criterion is very clear - you must have the need for the equipment within your home to qualify for any type of powered equipment whether it is a scooter or power wheelchair. Your doctor, physical therapist, occupational therapist and Emeraldmedicalservice.com staff can assist you in determining whether you will meet this basic requirement.
